Clingman’s Dome is actually the highest point in the State of Tennessee, and is right along the border with the State of North Carolina. At 6,643 ft. in elevation, Clingman’s Dome is also the third highest mountain east of the Mississippi River, behind only Mt. Mitchell and Mt. Craig, both of which are in western North Carolina. One of the great features of Clingman’s Dome, along with being in the well-known Great Smoky Mountains National Park, is the Observation Tower, where many visitors come every year to see some of the most amazing and awe-inspiring views of the Great Smoky Mountains that you may ever see.
Based at the summit of Clingman’s Dome, visitors can see these incredible views for up to 100 miles in all directions, seeing both western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee at the same time, along with other states, on especially clear days. Plus, Clingman’s Dome is half in Tennessee, and also half of North Carolina! In addition, the world-famous Appalachian Trail (AT) also runs across the top of Clingman’s Dome, attracting many hikers and explorers from around the world every year.
