Today, we are featuring the start of the Autumn Colors in the Smokies here in Gatlinburg, where the leaves on the many beautiful trees here in our area are beginning to change colors, even as we speak. While the main fall season for the changing of leaf colors is still a couple of weeks away (usually more towards mid to late October), some leaves here already changing colors somewhat, particularly at the higher elevations here in the Smokies. This is always a truly beautiful sight, and helps to create a truly unique atmosphere here in the Great Smoky Mountains, especially during the fall season. Next week, the City of Gatlinburg will be hosting its Annual 18th Taste of Autumn event, on September 17, 2015, from 5-8 PM at the Gatlinburg Convention Center. This annual event kicks off the Fall season, featuring lots of great food, entertainment, and all of the proceeds going to support the Sevier County United Way. Tickets are $25 each per person, with children 10 years and younger having free admission to the event. Multiple comedy acts will be featured, along with many local business sponsors, as well – a great event to kick off the Fall season!

Fall & Winter Weather Safety Tips in the Great Smoky Mountains!

The fall season is now in full swing here in the Great Smoky Mountains, and with the many colors of leaves right now, it truly makes for some incredible scenery! As we into the more colder months, we will eventually see the first snow of the season. For people of all ages, wintry weather presents a winter wonderland of fun, but it it also important to know what to do if and when wintry weather comes our way, such as snow, ice, or other similar weather. Today, we will present some common-sense tips for handling any winter weather that comes along here in the Great Smoky Mountains, regardless of whether your are living here, or just visiting for the first time.

One of the most important things to always remember while driving in any kind of snow or ice is to make sure to either have a vehicle (car, truck, etc.) that is all-wheel drive (or 4-wheel drive), if possible. If you don’t have a vehicle with all-wheel drive, then it is best to make sure that you have chains of some type for your tires, so you can safely navigate any slick or icy spots during any inclement weather. Also, be sure to place your vehicle in a lower gear (i.e., like 2nd or 3rd gear) when going along the roads, if possible, to avoid any accidents and to keep control of your vehicle while driving. Additional tips include the following, especially during any wintry weather:

Before any wintry weather, be sure to always check to make sure that you and your family has enough food, firewood, gas/propane, flashlights, and so forth, to make sure that you are prepared, in case of inclement weather;
Be careful while driving during any inclement weather, and make sure that your vehicle is fully prepared (i.e., has all-wheel drive, chains for tires, etc.);
If you plan to hike in the Smokies, be sure to check the weather before you go, and make sure that you pay attention to any changing weather, along with staying in close proximity to any marked trails, just to be on the safe side; and
Be sure to stay tuned to local media (i.e., TV, radio, etc.) for any changes in the weather, and plan accordingly, depending on what the forecast may do.

Most of all, be safe out there! Wintertime is a beautiful time on the Smokies, and seeing snow on Mt. LeConte and Clingman’s Dome is truly a wonderful sight. Bringing in the Fall Season in the Great Smoky Mountains!

As we start into the Fall months in the Great Smoky Mountains, we will see that the leaves will start changing color very soon, bringing many events, visitors, and opportunities for fun and enjoyment! The beauty of the Fall season in the Smokies cannot be underestimated, and there are many great events and activities going on right here, all built around the upcoming season!

The noteworthy part of the Fall season involves the changing of the leaf colors, and there are many great sites throughout Sevier County and the Smokies as a whole by which to view these changing colors. You can visit the City of Gatlinburg’s website today, which will tell you some suggested places by which to view the changing leaves, along with what you can expect during this time, which usually runs from about October 1st-November 15th. Also, there are many great events coming up in and around the Gatlinburg area particularly, which show this area’s undying enthusiasm for the Fall season. One of these events is the annual Oktoberfest at Ober Gatlinburg, which actually starts this weekend, and runs through until November 2nd, at the Ober Gatlinburg Ski Resort. Another signature event is the Gatlinburg Fine Arts Festival, which goes from October 3rd-October 5th, on the campus of the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, right in downtown Gatlinburg.
