On Sunday, June 15, 2014, we will celebrate Father’s Day, a time when we celebrate and honor the dads in our lives. Father’s Day itself was first commemorated back on June 19, 1910, in the State of Washington, and was born out of originally Mother’s Day, which was proclaimed by then-President Woodrow Wilson as an official holiday in 1914. Father’s Day itself would not be recognized as a nationwide holiday until 1972, when it was officially recognized by President Richard Nixon. Since that time, millions of Americans take time to celebrate and honor dads everywhere, spending nearly $1 billion annually every year to buy gifts for Dad. For more information on the history and origin of Father’s Day, please visit this link, to find how Father’s Day came into being and was eventually made into a nationwide holiday.
Right here in the Great Smoky Mountains, there are several events that you can enjoy with Dad throughout the weekend. One such event is actually a concert taking place on Saturday, June 14th, the day before Father’s Day, featuring The Oak Ridge Boys, at Pigeon Forge’s Country Tonite Theatre, with shows at 3 P.M. and 8 P.M., respectively. This world-famous group has earned multiple awards and have had numerous chart-topping singles in their well-known and storied career, and will offer a great concert for dads of all ages. For more information on this concert in Pigeon Forge, or how to get tickets, please visit this website to find out more.
If music is not what Dad wants this Father’s Day, then there are other events that Dad will probably enjoy more, right here in our area. There are multiple opportunities for fishing, with over 2,000 miles of fishable stream right here in the Great Smoky Mountains. In addition, for those dads that like motors and vehicles, there is the Floyd Garrett Muscle Car Museum, also located in Pigeon Forge, that offers nearly 100 classic American muscle cars, from racetrack-ready pace cars to some of Detroit’s finest muscle cars, all located here in Sevier County. Then, there is always the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, with plenty of opportunities for hiking, exploring, camping, and much more. There are a myriad of ways that you can celebrate and honor Dad this Father’s Day, and it is all within easy reach here in Sevier County.
