On Saturday, September 20, 2014, the Town of Pittman Center, TN, located just to the east of Gatlinburg, will be celebrating its annual Heritage Day event, from 9AM-4PM. Some of you are probably wondering – where is Pittman Center and what makes this amazingly beautiful mountain town so special? Actually, Pittman Center has a very interesting and unique heritage all its own, and also has earned many great distinctions and honors over the years for its location, as well as its natural beauty. Today, we focus on Pittman Center, and its truly unique mountain heritage, right here in the Great Smoky Mountains!

The story of Pittman Center starts with Frederick Emert, a Revolutionary War veteran who first settled in the area in the year 1784, and this area was first named Emert’s Cove, after Mr. Emert. Later, in 1919, a visionary Methodist missionary preacher named Dr. John Sevier Burnett came to the area, and began to build a center for the mission work being conducted there, and then his good friend, the Rev. Eli Pittman, came to the area a year later, in 1920, and then decided to build on the small settlement being established there, leading to the start of the Town of Pittman Center. In 1974, the Town of Pittman Center was officially incorporated in the State of Tennessee, and has remained as such ever since.

In addition, the Town of Pittman Center has also earned some notable distinctions over the years, as well. One of these involves the Middle Prong of the Little Pigeon River, which was recently ranked as being the cleanest river in the entire State of Tennessee. Also, the Town of Pittman Center was recently selected as being one of the best small cities in the United States. More importantly, the Town itself is situated in a broad valley area, with the nearby Great Smoky Mountains National Park serving as a wonderful and beautiful natural background, as well as being in close proximity to the nearby cities of Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, and many other Sevier County cities. As you travel up or down U.S. Highway 321, which goes through the Town of Pittman Center, it is not hard to see why this Town is “a community dedicated to preserving our mountain heritage.” For more information on Pittman Center, you can visit the Town’s official website today to learn more about this unique community.

This new events will feature cook-off contests, games, foot-stomping music from many different artists, and much, much more! Also in Gatlinburg, there are other events going during the remainder of the Spring season, as well. This week, Sevier County celebrates Earth Day with a number of events and activities going on in and around the County, including two noteworthy events going on right here in Gatlinburg! Here are some of these events that are going on, starting today.

The 7th Annual Earth Day Festival will be held in Gatlinburg, today, April 24th, from 3-7 PM, Mynatt Park. Early registration is encouraged, with race night registration beginning at 8 PM at the Nantahala Outdoor Center, and the race itself starting at 10 PM. Another noteworthy event outside of Earth Day relates to the 9th Annual Flower and Garden Show to be held on Saturday, April 26th, from 9 AM-4 PM, and is sponsored by the Sevier County Area Master Gardener’s Association and the Sevier County Extension Office of the University of Tennessee. This will be held at the Sevier County Fairgrounds, and will feature many vendors selling plants, products, and services related to gardening. One such event is the 5th Annual Shamrock Saturday Cruisin’ For Food, which will be on Saturday, March 15th, starting at the Tennessee Smokies Baseball Stadium in Kodak. From there, the Diner Rats Car Club will begin their cruise to The Diner in Sevierville at noon, where there will be drawings, prizes and traditional Irish food served throughout the day. One really interesting event starting on Saturday, March 15th, and going through until March 19th, is right here in Gatlinburg! The 2014 ClausFest Convention will start this weekend, featuring lots of Santas from all over the country, and also has a parade planned for Saturday, known as The Big Claus Parade! There will be multiple workshops, events, activities, and much more associated with ClausFest 2014, so there will be plenty of events for people of all ages! In addition, Sevierville will also host the 2014 Showstopper Regional Competition, which will be held at The Sevierville Convention Center Thursday, March 14th, through the 16th. All food donations will go to benefit Sevier County Food Ministries.
