A Step Back In Time At Smoky Mountain Tunes & Tales

Gatlinburg’s seventh annual begins on June 15th and goes on through August 11th. This summer long event features musical performances, storytelling and artisans portraying characters from the 1800’s forward. It is an interactive event that is educational and fun for the whole family. As you walk through downtown Gatlinburg after 6:00 PM you will be drawn in to as many as 12 nightly acts along the streets of Gatlinburg.

Enjoy many acts including clogging groups that will perform seven nights a week for the duration of the event. Musical performances will include the older Appalachian sounds of acts like Rattlesnake Holler & the Whiskey Bent Valley Boys to traditional bluegrass of Flicker Tail Holler and the Holloway Sisters.

You will be able to take advantage of educational opportunities such as how mountain and lap dulcimers and gourd banjos are made by local craftsmen like Denton Bragg and Mark Edelman. You can even learn a few fun moves and steps from the Back Porch Cloggers. Appalachian characters like Miss Nan and Quiltin’ Annie also teach the young and old about their old-time Smoky Mountain ways. After enjoying music and learning about a few Smoky Mountain trades, you can settle in and enjoy stories of the Great Smoky Mountains from characters like Ol’ Rowdy and Whitlin’ Joe.

Gatlinburg is truly a unique mountain town rich with Appalachian history and unique events. Special Events Manager, George Hawkins, said of Smoky Mountain Tunes & Tales, “Our intent is to take what we feel is one of Gatlinburg’s greatest assets – the walkability of the community – and provide something that is fun and somewhat different than what most places are doing.”

Pigeon Forge Welcomes Spring With The Grand Spring Rod Run

Sevier County real estate is moving and so are these cars. If you love cars this is a must attend event. Featuring thousands of cars and vendors from all across the nation, this is one of the biggest shows in the Southeast. Starting at traffic light number three in Pigeon Forge and going all the way down the Parkway metal and chrome is on display in every available parking space. Car owners are on hand to tell the story of these beautiful machines. You can enjoy all of the sights including J.R. Drake’s 1932 one of a kind custom state prison bus, vendor booths and numerous demonstrations. You will find professionals all up and down the strip ready to answer questions and show off their vintage and unique vehicles. There are several contests as well at The Grand Resort. This year will include a new category for “Rat Rods”. These vehicles focus on function not form and are meant to be driven. They are often shown stripped down or unfinished and are bound to display raw power.

After dark, watching the cars cruise up and down the strip is like a visit to yesteryear. It is a great time to visit the area and see yet one more reason Sevier County is a top vacation pick. This is the first of three very large car show events each year in the area. It is followed in September with the Shades of The Past and Fall Grand Rod Run, as well as numerous smaller car shows throughout the year. It is truly an auto enthusiast’s paradise.

A Memorable Day On Mt. Leconte: Experiencing The Annual Helicopter Supply Drop

I recently had the experience of helping with the annual helicopter supply drop at on Mt. LeConte. Wow! An amazing hike, amazing experience and amazing views. Today, I would like to share more about this experience, several photos and a little information about Mt. LeConte and The LeConte Lodge. If you have never been, today you will find out why this is one hike you should be putting on the calendar.

At 6,593 ft. elevation, Mt. LeConte is one of the highest peaks in The Great Smoky Mountains National Park. In 1924, avid hiker Paul Adams led an expedition up the mountain to show the group the rugged beauty of the mountains. They spent the night in a tent which later became a cabin and eventually LeConte Lodge. LeConte Lodge is the highest inn serving guests in the Eastern United States. Featuring a series of personal cabins and a central lodge/dining hall the lodge is usually open from March – November and can accommodate around 50 guests at a time. Guests must hike in on one of five trails that access the mountain. Being a quite popular trip, guests are encouraged to make reservations a year in advance. Due to the lack of traditional access supplies are brought in annually via a helicopter drop. It was a beautiful day for the air lift.

On the hike up the last of winter was still hanging on the mountain. By the next day it had completely melted & now it is officially spring.

Drop! Navigating a tight space the helicopter brings all of the fuel, canned goods, t-shirts and more.

The next day the fog put the final hours of the lift on hold. After all the excitement the fog made for another gorgeous hike down from Mt. LeConte.

You can see for miles from here. The second ridge line below the bird is a view of Chalet Village in Gatlinburg from “Cliff Tops” on Mt. Leconte.This was a truly awe-inspiring experience. If you have not hiked Mt. LeConte or visited the LeConte Lodge you should now.
You will find yourself surrounded by stunning views, wildlife and great people. Seeing Chalet Village from such a high vantage point in the picture above reminds us of what a great location the homes in this community occupy above Gatlinburg. Chalet Village is minutes to Ober Gatlinburg, downtown Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. Though it’s not Mt. LeConte, it has some pretty stunning mountain views of its own. Celebrating Spring In The Great Smoky Mountains

Early blooms, warm weather and news of  the in The Great Smoky Mountains National Park are all sure signs that spring is upon us. Registration has begun for this 5 day long annual event that will lead participants through all of the spring beauty the Smoky Mountains have to offer. Let’s take a look at what you can expect to find on this adventure.

The event will begin on April 25th with a luncheon at W.L. Mills Conference Room. The event offers 134 professionally guided walks on the trails in The Great Smoky Mountains National Park as well as indoor presentations in Mills Conference Center and Sugarlands Training Room in Gatlinburg. 

The event began in 1951 as a two-day event. Hundreds of participants attended from 20 different states. The event was featured in National Geographic magazine. During that first year, Lucinda Ogle worried that the weather would prevent access to many outdoor events and presented flower specimens from her own garden in a case of Coca-Cola bottles at one of the evening meetings. The Coke bottle flower garden is still a big part of the Spring Wildflower Pilgrimage and features over 100 different plant species. Today the number of participants has doubled and it is a great educational and social event for anyone wanting to learn more about the native plant species and take an opportunity to get outdoors to enjoy the beautiful spring weather.

Along with these tours and sessions you can enjoy the gallery of Smoky Mountain art and plant displays or get involved and volunteer to help with the event by contacting Holly at . This is a non-profit event that depends on the support of local organizations and volunteers to provide the wide variety of experiences each year.

Saddle Up & Come Visit The Great Smoky Mountains In February

 As many of you know The Great Smoky Mountain region boasts numerous festivals and events to celebrate the Appalachian heritage. No matter what time of year you find yourself visiting you can be sure there is something exciting going on. February is no exception, with the event beginning on February 23rd. Let’s take a look at what all the buzz is about.

 There is truly something for everyone at this four-day celebration. It has been listed in American Cowboy Magazine’s list of “Top 101 Western Events”. You can start things off at 10:00 AM on Wednesday with a cornbread tasting at Old Mill Square. From there you have your pick of locations and artists for dinner and intimate concerts on Thursday evening. Friday features three concerts throughout the day featuring top western artists. Many of the artists at the newest addition to the event, the “Stories & Strings” concert, have never performed together and it may truly be a once in a lifetime event. Saturday offers a wide variety of activities including western dance and things finish up on Sunday with a chuck wagon breakfast and cowboy church service. You can find the full schedule of events .

 We have had a remarkably warm winter here in the Great Smoky Mountains and now is a beautiful time to visit the area. In addition to the Saddle Up event, it is a great time to get into the outdoors. With the weather this nice there are beautiful hiking opportunities and plenty of wildlife sightings. Ober Gatlinburg is open as well and offers a multitude of activities from ice skating, a ride up the mountain side on the aerial tram to skiing & snow boarding (weather permitting). What Makes The Great Smoky Mountains A Top Destination?

Last week, we touched briefly on the recent that named Pigeon Forge #4 on its list of the top 15 United States vacation destinations “on the rise for 2012”.  Now we would like to explore some of the reasons the area could be named such a great destination and what this means to you in terms of a possible real estate purchase in The Great Smoky Mountains.

Trip Advisor attributed close proximity to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, outdoor activities and other attraction options like Dollywood as a few of the advantages of Pigeon Forge. As a part of Wilderness Wildlife Week, Appalachia Fest will take place on January 10th in Pigeon Forge. It is a free musical celebration of our mountain heritage. Spend Heartfelt Holidays In The Great Smoky Mountains

In an article dated November 21st, Time magazine listed Pigeon Forge as one of the top nine most “Christmassy” towns in America. When we take a look at all of the events, activities & traditions surrounding  the holidays in The Great Smoky Mountains, there is no room to wonder why.

Just this past weekend, Ripley’s Aquarium of The Smokies presented the 36th Annual Fantasy Of Lights Christmas Parade in Gatlinburg. More than 80,000 spectators were expected for the event. With over 100 parade entries and more than a dozen marching bands from Tennessee, North Carolina, Virginia, Georgia and Alabama it was a beautiful Christmas event. You can watch the festivities on video at this link. Coming up this Saturday, December 10th you can join The Great Smoky Mountains National Park for the 36th Annual Festival Of Christmas Past at Sugarlands Visitors Center. Focusing on the culture of the Smoky Mountains with an emphasis on Christmas, this is a free event sponsored in cooperation with The Great Smoky Mountains Association. There will be music by the Lost Mill String Band, Boogertown Gap and South of the River Boys, demonstrations of making mountain berry baskets, apple-head dolls, quilts, and apple butter along with many special presentations throughout the day.

In Pigeon Forge you can enjoy over five million lights on display, stop by Dollywood’s Smoky Mountain Christmas (three-time winner of America’s Best Christmas Event), take a stroll through The Christmas Place (the American South’s largest Christmas store) or spend an evening at the brand new “Smoky Mountain Opry Christmas Spectacular”.

These are just a few of the events that go on in Sevier County during this part of the year. It is truly a special time when The Smoky Mountains come to life with all of the beauty and cheer of the holidays.

For one reason or another many  of us get caught by the rapid progression of time as our planet completes one more revolution around the sun.For the blog, it seems only yesterday that we shared the incredible progression of spring time beauty overtaking these magnificent mountains. Now we are in the final days of one awesome fall of leaf changing color. Snow has already briefly dusted the highest  peaks of  The Great Smoky Mountains. Within a matter of weeks the leaves will have fallen for most deciduous trees. Our calendars display that the month of November is well underway. This can only mean that Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah & other important year-end holidays are rapidly approaching. So we need to examine the upcoming activities associated with our winter festivals. Sevier County kicks off their fabulous winter lighting displays in Sevierville, Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg. Monday, November 7th, marked Sevierville’s Winter Kick Off with music, lights and magic. This event features free food & entertainment each year. The evening wrapped up with “flipping the switch” to begin the area’s Winter Festival Of Lights. Dollywood began their Smoky Mountain Christmas on November 5th. Sevierville provides 3D glasses in limited quantities for $1.00/pair that give lighting displays a new look. Gatlinburg begins their Winterfest with parades, trolley rides, entertainment & more on December 9th.
